A member asked:

My son is having abdominal pain he went to er, did a ct scan, it showed he had inflammed lymph nodes in his stomach, it also showed the top of his appendix to be enlarged. can the inflammation cause appendicitis? can appendicitis cause inflammation?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: Some cases of appendicitis are thought to be related the location of a node. If it is too close to the top of the appendix, swelling could act like a tourniquet & cut off its blood flow & trigger appendicitis. The scattered enlarged nodes are likely just viral & could self heal.Appendicitis is usually the result of not the cause of inflammation.
