It happens: This is one of many features seen in complex migraines. Patients see it as a signal one is coming on. Docs use the feature as a diagnostic tool. It does not mean much more than that.

Pre-migraine symptom: Some people get an aura before the onset of a migraine. This could be flashing lights, nausea, sensitivity to light, etc. If they go into a dark room and lie quietly some people are able to stop the full blown headache. Please continue to see your doctor. Consider clinical hypnosis (www.asch.net) or biofeedback as well. Peace and good health.

Such symptoms are called "migraine auras" and are experienced rather commonly in those who suffer the Classical Migraine patterns. These typically depart as the headache phase emerges. One caveat, do not smoke or take female hormones with these symptoms as a stroke risk can be present if so.
