Swelling/pain: There of thumb is that any unusual bleeding, or as in your case pain and swelling, should be immediately investigated. Could be from impacted food debris, gum disease, abscessed tooth, late erupting 2nd or early erupting 3rd molar, a scratch, virus infection, and literally hundreds of other possibilities. Please call your Dentist for an examination.
