Can increase risk: High protein and low carb diets have been shown to increase kidney acid load, thereby increasing kidney stone risk. This diet can also increase calcium in the urine. Increased animal protein increases kidney excretion of oxalate, a chemical that combines with calcium to make one type of kidney stone.
