IT IS IMPERITIVE: that you tell your brother's Medical Care Team about his drinking!! A stroke will NOT PREVENT alcohol withdrawal effects some of which may be life threatening! Hope this is helpful! DR Z

Alcoholic & Stroke: Psychologically speaking, yes, having a stroke can work either way in terms of alcohol management. He can realize that too much alcohol is harmful and stop or he can give up, get depressed, and drink more. Please encourage him to go to 12 step meetings or see a social worker or psychologist.
