For what length of time can you have hpv before a pap smear detects it?

Oh, yes: Hpv is common. In several studies of college-age women, 20% were hpv positive at the beginning of the study and another 40% became positive in the next few years. That said, most hpv infections have no symptoms and most will go away by themselves. Hpv is associated with significant pap changes when it persists for >2 years.
