Hard to speculate: If he coughs mostly at night there may be something in his sleeping environment that triggers it or it could be post nasal drainage. Cough meds do little if anything at that age. The flu vaccine is best given weeks before or during the regional flu season, which occurs at different times in different parts of the world where this site is viewed.
