Yes: Since there are several viruses that produce the same set of symptoms such as you describe. Not all flu like illneses are due to the same virus, and therefore he may be suffereing from yet another virus with similar symptoms.

Flu shots help some, but are limited to 4 strains/shot before loosing strength. This could also be one of many other respiratory viruses.
