A member asked:

If there are no physical symptoms of hpv but there is a positive hpv found on pap smear, are they able to tell if it is an oral or genital cause?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Genital: HPV strains are specific to their environmental needs and occupy superficial layers of tissues they invade. If HPV was evident in a pap smear testing it only got there through genital/genital contact. That does not mean there was never any oral exposure, just that local findings mean local exposure.
