Ovulation: spotting: Before one ovulates, estrogen levels drop suddenly, which can cause brief bleeding. In one's 30's and on, this drop in estrogen is exaggerated b/c ovarian stimulation increases in order for ovulation to occur, therefore increasing the estrogen production, and the drop prior to ovulation can cause degeneration of the uterine lining, hence bleeding.
