Needles and pins: This can be a host of things. Ruling out a systemic condition like diabetes, cardiac, or other anomaly would be the road I'd be on. Consult with an Internist, Family Doc, and find out what's going on. This may require blood tests, detailed history, and other tests.

Too little Info to: offer much help. Swelling (edema) is excess water between cells. Reasons: Combination of gravity (over hours) plus excess body water retention as result of congestive heart failure +/- hepatic failure +/- kidney failure +/- leg venous obstruction +/- excess body water intake vs. elimination. Just the edema might induce the perceived "needles & pins" sensation as result of tissue stretching.
