Mimic depression: An underactive thyroid can cause depression symptoms while an overactive thyroid can cause anxiety symptoms. A thyroid test is usually recommended when someone first present with depression symptoms as the treatments are different.

Underactive: Low thyroid is more commonly associated with depression due to the low energy, poor appetite and poor sleep issues. Overactive thyroid is more commonly associated with anxiety.
