Immediate exam: Please take your child to a clinic for an exam immediately! Although viruses are the most common cause of conjunctivitis a thick yellow discharge that causes his eyelids to swell or stick together is usually due to bacteria such as strep, staph, or haemophilus. The treatment for bacterial eye infections is with antibiotic eye drops which need a prescription.
