Strep and other: bacteria normally live indefinitely on your skin, as part of the normal flora. It is usually out-competed by other species of bacteria and therefore does not cause infections. Occasionally if it is allowed to get inside skin mucosal surface or inside the epidermis, it will cause very inflammatory and serious infections such as strep throat.
