Can be: The odor forming glands in the armpits are under the influence of the adrenal glands. If this is not poor hygiene, it can certainly be the awakening of his adrenal glands. This can precede puberty by a number of years. I would review his bathing practices and invest in a deodorant. I am sure he doesn't want to stand out.
