Via the nose: The CDC reports that Naegleria fowleri infects people when water which contains the ameba enters the body via the nose. This is generally seen when people go swimming or diving in warm freshwater places, such as lakes and rivers. Then the Naegleria Fowleri ameba travels up the nose to the brain where it destroys brain tissue. There do not seem to be reports of infection of this nature via wounds.
