A member asked:

I found out i have a sore throat. but recently, i feel as if it's getting worse. it's hard sleeping, it gets a bit hard to breathe (maybe over exaggerating) and i'm only able to eat popsicles and yogurt. it hurts to swallow. does it go away by itself?

Depends on severity: A person with throat symptoms of difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing should be seen by a doctor right away. There may be an abscess under the tonsils or behind them at the back of the throat. Sometimes, symptoms are milder and a patient can be seen by her primary doctor to check for strep throat (antibiotics needed). If symptoms are very worrisome, one should call 911 for an ambulance.
