Very odd: Had to say what is going on remotely. I would mention to this your GP at your next visit. If you are having difficulty swallowing and choking on food/liquids please get seen right away.

See gp : Decrease salivation can cause difficulty chewing but it should not occur only with starchy food . Decrease salivation can be due to various reasons , Please consult your doctor for examination and further management.

Salivary glands: A possible reason for difficulty with chewing could be dysfunction of your salivary glands. There are several conditions that can lead to this eg Sjorgren's syndrome (an autoimmune condition) or salivary gland stones or side effects from medications (tricyclic antidepressants, zopiclone). Suggest taking this up further with your GP.
