A member asked:

My 2 year old has lots of phlegm and a bad cough. took him to the paed last monday and he hasn't fully recovered. since he can't cough out phlegm, what do you recommend?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Phlegm with URI: Children this age do not expel their mucus out, it travels from lungs and into esophagus/GI tract to expel with stool. We usually allow them to cough as needed and can use saline to thin it out (there are kits for this OTC). You can use mucinex at night if severe symptoms. If cough persists, wheezes occur or fevers, check back both regular MD. Welcome to health tap! Dr. Ivy Fisher
