I tried to teach a 3-yr. old to learn to recognize letter names and numbers. the child fidgets, loses attention. is this realistic to try and do?

No: We don't have sit down school anywhere in the industrialized world at age 3. Their attention span is about 3 minutes. Let the educators do this deed when they reach an appropriate developmental stage. Enjoy the kid while you can.
