Late taking oral bc: Most oral bcp's are "combination" low dose pills, containing both estrogen and a progestin. The placebo pills have zero hormones, and are taken for seven days before resuming active bcp's. Being "late" on an active pill does not remove protection, but may result sometimes in breakthrough bleeding.
