Yes: Apparently immunity from vaccination to this year's strain is not as robust and thus the epidemic even among those vaccinated. Despite the news stories, the death rate is actually still quite low and hence they make the news. If you are concerned. ask your doctor to Rx you Tamiflu which may help reduce the severity of the disease. The vaccine you rec'd remains partly protective .

Severe flu season: Yes the 2017-8 season of the flu is more severe than usual. Also this year's flu shot is not as effective against preventing flu compared to previous years. However the flu shot will give partial protection.
