A member asked:

6cm complex nodule on thyroid, a few calcifications, heterogenous. are chances high this is malignant? should it just be removed without fna results?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

May need an FNA: There are many (5) criteria for determining whether a thyroid nodule is at risk for malignancy, and whether FNA is indicated. Calcifications (specifically, microcalcifications), are just one. Additional specific criteria (not just being "complex"), such as echogenicity, margin description, is required to make a further determination.
