All depends.: for a torn muscle or tendon, would favor MRI. A neoplasm could be initially be evaluated with an ultrasound. it may determine whether cystic or solid

MRI : MRI is much more sensitive and shows structures in much greater detail than ultrasound. In some places, ultrasound is easier to obtain and less expensive and may be adequate to show what is going on, but it is not nearly as powerful of a test.
