Many things: Doctors assess the severity of the depression including the risk of patient harming themselves. Some doctors use questionnaires to help with the assessment. Sometimes blood tests are ordered. Depending on the severity of the depression treatment may include: Self-help advice. Counseling/psychology (including cognitive behavior therapy). Medication. Urgent referral to specialist.
