Doctor can examine: Throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold virus (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies, irritants, stomach acid reflux, etc... Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly. With bad luck, a person can catch strep throat and influenza or a cold at the same time.

Infection?: Although your initial symptoms were compatible with a viral infection, the throat symptoms have lasted too long to make me suspect that you may have a strep throat or even mono. It is time to visit your doctor to get treated.
