A member asked:

My 22 year old daughter has a red eye, swollen with itchiness and secretion of white sticky substance. is a visit to the doctor necessary?

Possibly: If the vision is affected or the eye is painful, she needs to see an ophthalmologist. If what you describe is the only issues, then she can keep it clean, and if the condition starts to clear she can tough it out. But if it worsens, she should see an ophthalmologist.

Yes. Ophthalmologist: If there was watery or mucous discharge most probably it is viral and goes away in 10 days. But a white Sticky discharge is more serious. You must see an ophthalmologist that may do a culture for appropriate treatment.
