You may be: describing DeQuervain's tenosynovitis...a very common disorder of the thumb often associated with various arthritic disorders...You should get a definite diagnosis and a "hands on" (PUN intended) exam is needed. Nerve: This sounds like the extensor surface of the thumb where the dorsal radial sensory nerve can be irritated. This nerve is very superficial and can be easily injured in its course across the wrist into the thumb. Ice, immobilization of the thumb & wrist, & antinflammatories can help. The median nerve and tendons do not tend to give this story. X ray of right thumb & hand to look for a bony spur.
