A 39-year-old female asked:

i had to drive through a county w/ a whooping cough outbreak. didnt get out only drove - is this a risk to bring home the bacteria to my 2 month old?

No: This disease is spread primarily by droplets/saliva. Since such a drive through would not expose you to either it is not an issue. Many OB's offer a DtaP shot during pregnancy to help protect babies during their first months. If you got one the immunity should still be in force in you & baby. If you didn't, you could always get one to decrease the risk for you to carry it home to your baby.

Possibly: Flu can include: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, extreme fatigue, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. If progresses and worsens, respiratory distress and worse. Colds can have the same but usually not extreme fatigue, muscle aches and chills.

What can I do to prevent bacterial infections?

Dr. Bryan Levey

Good hygiene: The best way to prevent bacterial infections, or viral infections, is good hygiene. Wash your hand properly and often. Next come nutrition; your immune system works much better if you give it the proper tools to work with. Next comes sleep; not sleeping properly or enough has been shown to weaken the immune system and increase susceptibility to infections.

49 year old with serious nasal congestion, really bad when lying down. Have had this problem for a while?

Seek treatment: Infection can cause congestion as well as bad allergies. There are medicines for both. We have many different medications for severe nasal allergies so see your doctor to know what treatment would be right for you. When you lie down the pressure in the veins of your nasal passages is higher and the congestion is usually worse. That is normal.

I had UTI and while I was getting treated I was bleeding a lot, like a normal period, but is that normal? I had my period a week before I had uti.

No: Treating a UTI should not cause vaginal bleeding. Sometimes a UTI can cause some blood in your urine but it is usually not heavy. It is possible the symptoms felt like a UTI but were from some other cause.
