Sometimes: Decompensating vertical phoria (DVP) refers to the restart of a pre-existing doubling of vision in the vertical axis. These generally are constant in all gaze positions and can be improved with prism glasses. Fourth nerve palsy Is when the nerve to the fourth nerve is interrupted which causes a vertical doubling that varies with eye position. Prisms usually are not helpful.
