Ibuprofen or Tylenol: will help if having pain, but the best thing is to offer something to chew and eat while landing, the part of the trip most likely to cause ear problems. If your child has an upper respiratory infection with a very congested nose, it would be reasonable to premedicate with Benadryl or other antihistamine.

Decongestant: Topical decongestants to improve air flow between the throat and the ears/ sinuses. A squirt of Afrin and a squirt of Flonase up the nose before boarding the plane. Generics are the same but cheaper. Oxymetazoline and flutacasone.
