Many possibilities: Quite a few diagnoses come to mind, Could be infection, could be circulation problem or could be part of some inflammatory condition. Needs to be assessed as certainly needs examination and may need tests such as X-rays and blood tests to make the diagnosis. Please see a doctor to have these things considered/arranged. I take from your: question that it is NOT swollen around or at the base of the nail...this would suggest a paryonychia. Swelling along the side of the finger near the joints suggest inflammation of the joint or arthritis. You have said it was not injured. It think it is unlikely that a low grade skin infection would last a couple of months without pain. Since it doesn't hurt/cause dysfunction, I think you can watch
