HSV II outbreak: By the time an actual outbreak occurs, killing the virus with acyclovir or valcyclovir will not instantly heal the ulcerated area(s). The virus which caused the ulcerated painful area is killed by the medication, but the tissue destroyed by the virus takes longer to actually heal. This will not be hastened by taking more acyclovir, however.

Longer won't help: In general, the virus is suppressed within the first 2-3 days. Then it's just healing time. No matter the cause of a skin injury -- trauma, burn, herpes, or anything else -- once the cause is gone, healing generally takes 7-10 more days. If your outbreak is improving, there probably would be no benefit in further treatment. But ask your doctor if you remain concerned or uncertain.

Herpes : Suppressive treatment would prevent new lesions from appearing, old lesions will take time to heal . Depending on strength of aciclovir tablet suppressive treatment can be taken for longer time , please see your GP .
