Swollen thumb: Thumb swelling and tenderness suggests inflammation and/or infection unless you recently injured the thumb. Associated redness can be from infection or other inflammation. Inflammation would be helped by medications like Advil or Aleve. I recommend an evaluation by your physician or a hand surgeon.
