Doctor can evaluate: Tonsillitis can be viral or bacterial. Viral infections just get symptomatic treatment such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin for pain. Sometimes sore throat lozenges can help. Bacterial infections need antibiotics, so a doctor should evaluate. Strep throat is a common throat infection and is easily treated. One should always tell the doctor if a throat STD could be happening (due to oral sex).
