Joint pain: The overall evidence for glucosamine is that it does not work. This might be because it only works for some people. There is no harm in trying for 2-3 weeks and seeing if things improve; glucosamine is expensive so i would not continue it unless you think it is working.

Yes: You can take glucosamine if you want to. There is no hard science that it does anything. It will not prevent joint pain in young people however. If you have joint pain you can do a trial of 2 to 3 months of use and see if it helps with already existing pain. Otherwise there would be no need to take it. If it does not help with present pain then stop it.

Yes: The combination of glucosamine and chondroitin has been shown in studies to (1) provide a degree of pain relief in the short term, and (2) trigger growth of new cartilage when taken for at least two years straight. So it can help you pain and reverse some of the chronic damage. You can find this in the health food store. MSM is not necessary and adds to the cost of the product.
