Some possibilities: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Some throat lozenges and Tylenol or Motrin (ibuprofen) can lessen pain.

Throat infection.: At the least, this may be a throat infection brewing. This could be viral (more likely) or bacterial. See how it goes over the next day or so. If your symptoms progress, you should be evaluated to see if directed treatment may be needed.
