Blood test: He can get a blood test to see if he already has the virus. Probably he does. If he is positive, the risk is from his own virus, not yours. Many transplant teams will routinely give their patients prophylactic acyclovir or valacyclovir. If he does not have the virus you can take a daily dose of antiviral to reduce the shedding of hsv virus. Probably you already have this med.
