Can an echocardiogram miss aortic stenosis? echo and stress test norm a year ago. it appears i now have as. can aortic stenosis develop that quickly?

AS: Good question. The echo might have shown very mild AS and now it has gotten more significant. And yes sometimes things can change in a year even without an obvious reason. If it is not critical AS then generally the treatment is keeping an eye on it with routine echos and keeping your blood pressure tightly controlled.

Yes: one can develop AS in a year. But, usually it develops gradually over many years. The Echo done a year ago may have underestimated the degree of AS or the presence of AS. Likewise, the recent Echo may also over estimate the degree of AS. When you have a question of degree of AS- It is best to get another opinion and echo to help determine the actual degree of AS.

Aortic stenosis: If significant will be picked on Echocardiogram and physical examination . Mild Stenosis may be missed on PE and Echocardiogram depending on the experience of the examiners. It may be possible that the stenosis may have progressed over a year
