Don't know why: Nail dents/ pitting might be related to alopecia areata, reactive arthritis, eczema or psoriasis. Crumbling nails can occur due to lengthy contact with nail polish, detergents, chemicals, water. Other possible causes: fungal infections, lichen planus, nail psoriasis, & thyroid problems. Consider dermatological eval to determine cause and treatment.
