Foot pain: This is often caused by a tendinitis of the dorsal tendons of the foot. There is also can be irritation to a nerve which runs in that area too.

Tendonitis: The fact it is painful with toe range of motion leads me to believe it's tendinitis of the extensive tendons. Do you feel a knot or bump on the top of your foot?
