Yes: Many hernias are congenital, related to strength in connective tissue. The majority of hernias of consequence are ventral, inguinal or femoral and diaphragmatic hernias.

Common: All 3 of these hernias are quite common. The most likely to need surgical repair, however is the incisional hernia, as it is most likely to lead to complications such as incarceration or strangulation (where the intestines get stuck in the hernia). Be sure to have your physician assess them to determine the proper treatment for you, and check for any other hernias.
