When i go to sleep and during the night i wake up with pain in the upper leg i am sleeping on. it feels like as if sitting for a long time and your bum starts paining. this pain does not go away imediately if i turn around on my other side.

Herniated disc: It is possible that a herniated disc is causing a pinched nerve in your lower back. Since the pain affects you at night while you are not weight bearing, this would be one consideration. Have you had a recent injury to your lower back? There are other possibilities as well. Your physician can do an exam and order appropriate tests to get to the source of your pain. Best wishes.

Spine issue?: If it's not just because you're simply applying local pressure on the thigh while you sleep, then it may be related to a lumbar spine issue. May be bursitis as well, with pressure irritating an inflamed trochanteric bursa.
