Life's uncertainties: The only 2 things certain in life are "death and taxes." For lab tests, the meaning of the result depends on the patient, the test, and the situation. Thus, a lab tech may get stabbed by a bloody needle after using it on 2-yr-old toddler or on a 20-yr-old heroin addict. With the former, a negative at 28 days is very definitive; but with the latter, still definitive but consider a final test later.

Negative not: definitive. A positive result would be definitive but a negative one, this soon after exposure does not rule out infection. Repeat the test a 12 weeks and 6 months after exposure. Wish you good health!
