The basics: Sepsis involves a loss of the bodies self maintenance mechanisms.Fever is part of the bodies defensive systems & would usually be present at least transiently if the patient had a competent immune response. However,anyone at any age with progressive sepsis may have a subnormal temperature.I recall a 10 yo with meningococcal sepsis that presented with low BP, low temp & low WBC=died in hours.
