What could be the cause of tongue pain rear of mouth left hand side. no ulcers or abscesses and was pain free until i woke up for work this morning. it's hard to eat and drink also.

The lingual: tonsils ( not the "usual tonsils which are in the pharynx and vsisble) are located in the "way back" of the tongue on both sides and are sometimes infected in viral illnesses (as well as some bacterial infections) HOT TEA is very helpful! gargling with salt water may also help.
If symptoms increase...an ENT (Ear Nose Throat) specialist will be able to visualize and confirm the diagnosis.
