It is common to have: irregular bleeding in the first 3 months, sometimes heavy. However once the Mirena (levonorgestrel) has been assimilated periods become much lighter, often times disappearing altogether. This is a desirable side effect for most women. However, if your periods are getting heavier not lighter, it is time to revisit your GYN and ask about possibly switching you to another type of IUD or other.
