A member asked:

Family physician wants my 10 yr old to go for x-rays for possible mild scoliosis. is this really needed if mild? is mri effective for imaging? thx

Simple/safe/cheap: The proper study for suspected scoliosis is a full spine x-ray. You are more likely to need an x-ray at age 10 (than 18) for the same degree of scoliosis before the kid hits a growth spurt which often causes it to worsen. Repeated studies may be needed yearly depending on the degree of bend(s) If you catch it early and treat you can avoid major surgery.
