A member asked:

A friend of mine has prominent finger pads that resemble fetal finger pads, but has no other symptoms of kabuki syndrome. could there be another reason for this?

Can be harmless: Minor anomalies like this are common. A few folks have this and nothing else. There is a lot written about dermatoglyphics and it's basically worthless. One of my doctor friends has Rubinstein-Taybi hands and is otherwise perfectly fine. You won't find the cause. Just enjoy knowing each other.

Dermatoglyphics: David W. Smith found that fingerprint patterns depended on pad prominence. A flat pad causes an arch pattern, a prominent pad causes a whorl, at around 13 weeks. Severe fetal growth restriction, as in trisomy 18, causes arches. Anything causing swelling-like ascites or lymphedema-causes whorls, like Turner syndrome. The term "fetal finger pads" has been replaced with "prominent finger pads".
