Influenza, cold: The influenza virus and the common cold viruses (rhinovirus, coronavirus, corizyvirus, and adenoviruses all have symptoms very similar to mumps. The difference is longevity of illness with cold viruses generally lasting only a few days. Mumps and influenza viral infections are prolonged lasting several weeks. Early on in mumps people often think they have a cold virus due to similar symptoms.
